The Major General Tawfiq Tirawi Welcoming the Russian Envoy

On Tuesday and at the University campus, Maj. Gen. Tawfiq Tirawi, the chairman of the board of trustees of Al-Istiqlal University welcomed Dr. Haidar Aghann, the Russian envoy to Palestine, who was accompanied by the vice president of the Russian mission and the master of ceremonies and protocol in the Russian Mission, in the presence of the University president. Prof. Abdel Nasser Qadoumi, and his vices for military and academic affairs.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Maj. Gen. Tirawi confirmed the permanent cooperation with the Russian Federation. He said that the University is one of the Palestinian institutions built as a first step towards the end of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian lands.

Concerning the academic curricula at the University, Maj. Gen. Al-Tirawi said that Russian language along with other languages are introduced to be taught at the University as well as opening the door for citizens to join a private Russian-language courses. 

Regarding developing the human cadres at Al-Istiqlal University, Al-Tirawi talked about the cadets sent to Russia to continue their studies in different majors. Therefore, he requested from the ambassador allocating scholarships for studying Russian language to improve the quality of teaching it, or hosting some Russian specialists to give lectures about how to teach this language.

For his part, the Russian ambassador thanked Maj. Gen. Tawfiq Tirawi for the warm reception. He said that was the first visit to a Palestinian university stressing that Al-Istiqlal University has full potentials to continue as a unique university in Palestine and the region. He added that the cadets are the future and education is the best way to build bridges of knowledge.

On the political side, Dr. Aghann pointed to the historical relationship with the Palestinian people including its support to the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and the Palestinian Authority in the sake of ending occupation and building State of Palestine, stressing his country's support for the recent UN Security Council resolution No. (2334) condemning the Israeli settlements on the Palestinian land..

The Russian ambassador asserted that his country is ready to provide the full academic support to Al-Istiqlal University as well as its readiness to visit it at any time to contribute in improving the cadets’ education in regional and international events.

 

Prof. Abdel Nasser Qadoumi, the president of the university and his vices for academic and military affairs met the guest and his companions. He presented a detailed presentation about the university, the academic plan, and the progress of faculties and buildings. He talked about the features of IU especially as it encompasses security, military and police majors and what distinguishing it is 30% of cadets are females. He indicated that the university is a member in the Arab, Islamic and international unions of universities. This allows the cadets to continue their studies in any of the universities that share the membership of these unions.

The president of the university hoped an additional, joint, future cooperation with Russia. He mentioned that he will lead the university’s delegation to Russia next May. He also wished that there will be cooperation in the field of graduate studies through offering scholarships for students and staffs to develop the human cadres of the university.

At the end of the visit the Russian ambassador met the cadets of Al-Istiqlal University at the theatre of Sheikh Hazza’ Bin Zayed Alinhayan. He talked about his country’s attitude towards the Palestinian cause and the provided support and joint cooperation to the Palestinians for ending the Israeli occupation and facilitating building the Palestinian State.
