Al-Istiqlal University conducts an awareness lecture on the occasion of the International Day against the Death Penalty

The department of the legal clinic at Al-Istiqlal University carried out an awareness lecture on the occasion of the “International Day against the Death Penalty”, which falls on October 10 every year, in partnership with the Independent Commission for Human Rights represented by Mr. Islam Al-Tamimi, and in the presence of Mr. Hindam Rajoub from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and several academic staff.

Dr. Osama Al Darag, the Head of the Criminology and Law Department, praised the efforts of the organizers and participants, mentioning the importance of increasing the legal awareness of students and promoting their knowledge of the human and legal dimensions of issues that affect the Palestinian reality and related to the nature of their specialization and their work in the future.

Furthermore, Mr. Al-Tamimi discussed the obligations of the State of Palestine after its accession to the Optional Protocol to abolish the death penalty, besides the guarantees of those sentenced to death according to the legislation in force in Palestine, and the need to take all measures which aim at preserving the values and security of society.

For his part, Mr. Hindam talked about the growing consensus on the abolition of the death penalty internationally and the position of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights toward it, in addition to the unacceptable risk of executing innocents without clear evidence.

In the end, Dr. Fadi Alawneh, the Head of the Police Sciences Department, and Mr. Mohammed Abu Kaf, a lecturer in criminology, explained in detail the charters and public opinions that dealt with this topic between supporters and opponents.
